Frequently asked questions

Where do the words come from?

All words come from the EFF Large Wordlist (CC BY 3.0), a list of common English words made for passphrases. The answers are its five-letter words, minus names and odd spellings.

Which guesses are accepted?

A guess must be a word from our list: the five-letter EFF words plus plurals and verb forms made by adding “s” to its four-letter words, about 1,250 in all. Because the list is small, a real word may be refused; switch on “Accept any five letters” in settings if that gets in the way.

How do repeated letters work?

Each letter in the answer can colour only one tile. If you guess a word with two E’s and the answer has one, only one E turns green or yellow (green first) and the other turns grey.

What is hard mode?

In hard mode every green letter must stay in its place and every yellow letter must be used in your next guesses.

Is the daily word the same for everyone?

Yes. It changes at midnight on your device, and everyone on the same date gets the same word. Your stats and streak are saved in your browser.
