Frequently asked questions

What is the noise sample?

A short part of the recording with only background noise, such as the pause before someone speaks. The tool learns the noise from it and turns down sound that matches it everywhere. The quietest half-second is picked automatically; drag across the waveform to choose a better part.

What kind of noise can it remove?

Steady noise works best: hiss, air conditioners, fans, computer hum, traffic rumble and the 50 Hz buzz from wiring. Sudden sounds such as a dog barking, horns or other voices can’t be separated this way.

Which hum filter should I use?

Use 50 Hz in India, Europe, most of Asia and Africa, and 60 Hz in the USA, Canada and parts of South America. Leave it off if you don’t hear a low buzz.

Can it clean the sound of a video?

Yes. Choose an MP4 or WebM video. After cleaning, Save video puts the cleaned sound back into the video; the picture is copied without re-encoding.

Is there a length limit?

Files up to 10 minutes. Longer recordings need a lot of memory in a browser, so cut them into parts first with the Audio Trimmer or Video Trimmer.
