Browsers connect to each other directly (WebRTC); only play, pause and seek positions, names and chat travel between you. Video files never leave anyone’s device. YouTube links aren’t supported because YouTube’s terms don’t allow syncing its player this way.

How to start a watch party

  1. Enter your name and press Create party, then share the code, link or QR code.
  2. Choose a video file your friends also have, or paste a direct link to an MP4, WebM or .m3u8 stream.
  3. Press play. Everyone’s video follows yours; chat and send reactions while you watch.

Frequently asked questions

Do my friends need the same file?

For a file, yes: each person opens their own copy, matched by name and size, and plays it from their device. Nothing is uploaded or streamed between you. A direct link to an MP4, WebM or .m3u8 stream needs no file at all.

How is everyone kept in sync?

The host’s player is the reference. Everyone else jumps to the right spot if they are more than a second out, and speeds up or slows down very slightly for smaller differences, so you stay within a fraction of a second.

Can everyone control the video?

By default only the host can play, pause and seek. The host can tick “Let everyone play, pause and seek” to share control.

Why can’t I use a YouTube link?

YouTube’s terms don’t allow its player to be controlled and synced this way outside its own apps. Use a direct video link or a file everyone has.

What happens if someone joins late?

They jump straight to the current moment and see the recent chat. If the host leaves, the party pauses until the host comes back with the same code.
