Frequently asked questions

Why measure pixels instead of characters?

Google cuts titles by width, not character count. “WWWW” is far wider than “iiii”, so a 55-character title in capital letters can be cut while a 65-character one in lower case fits.

What are the current limits?

Roughly 600 px for desktop titles (20 px Arial), about 920 px for desktop descriptions and 680 px on mobile (14 px Arial). Google changes its layout often, so treat these as approximate.

Will Google always use my meta description?

No. Google rewrites many snippets using text from the page that better matches the search. A clear, accurate description still gets used more often.

Why are some words bold?

Google bolds words that match the search query. Add your target keywords to see how that affects the look and width of your snippet.
